How to organize

  • GeKo gives a summary of the Onionfest idea together with some background explaining where we are coming from
  • 10 minute exercise (post-its with sharpies) of collecting ideas participants have for things they want to see at/with an Onionfest (DOs) and things they don't want to have (DON'Ts), clustered around common topics brought up:

    • DOs
      • Venue
        • tables, chairs, power strips, chill out area, DIY style not luxurious
        • community booth area for related projects
        • hammocks and bonfires
        • child-/family-friendly
      • Content
        • music (DJs and live music) and art
        • not just relay operator meetups, e.g. FLINTA* meetings
        • hands-on workshops
        • lightning talks
        • track for researchers to share their ongoing and recent work related to Tor
        • opt in video recording and streaming of talks
        • some user-focused events reflecting on best practices (as users)
        • talks/workshop inspired, like RustWeek?
        • inclusion of greater privacy communtiy
      • Money and Funding
        • merchandize, please
        • travel grants
        • maybe TPI-adjacent, that is having TPI as a funder?
        • communtiy event without a big corporate sponsors
        • levelling costs: price for participation relative to visitors' capacity for paying
      • Misc
        • announce things in advance with posters at other events, e.g. Bornhack, GPN, CCC etc.
    • DON'Ts
      • VIP area
      • commerical advertisements
      • companies doing talks to promote
      • Hylkedam
      • Military, AI, cryptobro sponsors
      • expensive event, like MozFest, requiring big sponsors
  • are community gathering like we do per definition more local (than, say, an Onionfest)?

  • both for gatherings and Onionfest travel has to be sorted out by oneself (otherwise we had to deal with visas etc.)
    • keep ambitions low and accept chaotic stuff happening
  • EU is/has been funding for cross-country travel etc.
  • Task: gather funding sources, reach our to NLnet/Prototype fund
  • TPI endorsements might help in aquiring funding
  • maybe create an association for reimbursements (maybe with membership fees so we have some money to use for funding things)
  • Task: look into mkdocs calendar funcionality for an event calendar (make sure we switched to Zensical first)
  • Task: one-pager for capturing the community gathering idea to show around to people (for getting funding etc.)
